The Michael Hamilton Fund
Michael was always deeply supportive of his son Matt’s civic engagement and leadership.
During Matt’s time at Duke University, he served as an Advocate and leader with the Community Empowerment Fund (CEF). Michael was especially proud of the impact Matt made by shaping CEF in its early days in Durham, as the student-powered organization grew to holistically support the goals of homeless and near-homeless individuals. In honor and memory of Michael, the family created this special fund at CEF to invite loved ones to support this continued service.
CEF provides relationship-based support and matched savings accounts to people experiencing or at-risk of experiencing homelessness in Orange and Durham Counties. CEF’s programs are powered by “Advocates,” student volunteers like Matt from Duke and UNC who walk with Members towards reaching goals, securing employment and housing, and building financial stability for themselves and their families. In 2016, CEF’s 200 Advocates provided personalized, hands-on support to almost 1,000 families.
To honor Michael’s commitment and passion for higher education, gifts to the Michael Hamilton Fund for CEF will support CEF’s efforts to enable Members to access higher education, vocational certifications, skill-building trainings, and resources to advance greater career aspirations.
